GSAA - DUCOM IM Clerkship


  1. Be professional, show up on time every day and immediately contact your attending if you have a legitimate reason for being late or absent. Follow Drexel’s protocol for notifying all relevant parties.
  2. At GSAA, we have a culture of respect and inclusivity. Be respectful to everyone you work with and expect to be respected in turn.
  3. Be clear about where you need to be every day and if you have questions, do not be afraid to ask
  4. You are expected to start off carrying 1-2 patients, and as you progress in the rotation, you can start to carry 3 or even 4 patients
  5. You are to write a complete progress note on your patients and your notes have to be cosigned by your attending
  6. You will not see patients who are COVID19 positive, or being ruled out for COVID19
  7. Your goal as students is to learn clinical medicine. Your best bet to learning this is to jump in and get as much exposure to patients as you can.
  8. Each week, your attending will present a formal didactic lecture, specific day and time to be determined by your attending
  9. As students, you are strongly encouraged to prepare a presentation on a topic of your choice and present this either weekly or every two weeks
  10. You are expected to adhere to all assignments you are responsible for by DUCOM
  11. There will be a monthly mandatory mini-workshop for you, in this workshop, we will discuss communication skills and learning strategies
  12. You will do long call once a week, long call means you will stay to admit patients from 4 pm to 8 pm and learn the workflow of the admission process.
  13. You will work one weekend shift a week, either Saturday or Sunday, you can decide this with your cohort on weekly basis.
  14. You are expected and encouraged to observe as many inpatient procedures as you can, you have the option to observe paracentesis and thoracentesis, you can learn POCUS (point of care U/S), you can observe echocardiogram inpatient, you can also observe GI procedures, nuclear stress studies, and/or IR procedures, pending approval from the specific departments
  15. You are expected to participate in MDR rounds with nurses, patient care coordinators, social workers
  16. You are highly encouraged to observe palliative meetings in person
  17. Have fun and don’t be afraid to make mistakes – because this will help you learn better.
